I <3 Interfaces, Topdesk and Piclens

Topdesk: Vista is cool, but left me feeling it was lacking and was basically useless by default; then again you could say that about most stock OS's. Vista's FLIP3D function, however, is very useful in my opinion. Topdesk is a pay-for/find crack application which adds the FLIP3D "alt-tab" control to XP as shown above running close to flawlessly off a crappy Toshiba Sat with Intel chipset and half a gigabyte of memory.

Piclens: this is a relatively new but hyper-popular FireFox extension which adds a Kaleidescope-like picture browsing interface. It has a few caveats: namely you can NOT save pics from its captures, and it loses the ability to use Customize Google url spoofs which direct web images straight to jpg.

A godsend for Flickr journals with functionality in Google and Yahoo images and a bunch of other sites. Just mouse over the image, and a small button is floated over the image; press that and the application does its dirt. Feels a bit like being stuck in an Apple commercial without the trip to the Castro.

This is my crappy-lappy system running a rather large Piclens scroll of materials got from a Google image search for "bat shit crazy."

Now I know some of you have less spare time than I do (in between filling out forms for unemployment and food stamps, I have plenty of unfilled hours during my day that isn't spent searching Craigslist for jobs), so I suppose it's with that in mind that I pass along the nuggets of gold that I pan for.

Without a doubt SWPL is my new favorite blog, though I really enjoy reading Ask a Mexican as well. I think the reason I like these it mocks the omnipresent world that surrounds me of liberal white guilt and all that. Plus as I'm Jewish, I feel a bit more free to stray from the White person pack.

As a bit of a bonus I was called inept and lazy today, so I guess that must mean that I'm even further away from white-personness. On the other hand It's my fault that other people aren't happy all the time, so I must still have a white root at the bottom of my family tree.

I do think that the $60 price tag is a bit excessive though. How about some entrepenureal types buy one and do a bit of reverse engineering to get it right, and sell it for $10 at Walgreens? Movie Review part Deux

Deux: French for the number two.

So I've been nagged for about a billion and a half years to watch the movie Superbad, and I'm roughly 15 minutes into it and I've realized that I haven't laughed yet. Aren't these 40 million dollar blockbuster teenish comedy films supposed to make you laugh? I know that Seth Rogan is supposed to be this comedic genius and all but what is supposed to make this funny? OK, so the Orson Welles joke in the beginning was kind of witty, but c'mon. I'll report more as I watch more, but so far I'm dissappointed. I make dirtier jokes here at home, and no one is banging down my door to get an imaginary spec script from me. Shenannigans is what I say...

UPDATE:

Ok so I laughed about 30 seconds after I wrote the above critique. It was where Michael Cera paints the face of his home Ec bitch with flour to make him look like a cat. Then he makes the kid do the tiger roar..I thought of the "sorry roger you tiger now" comcast ad, and laughed. So maybe their humor is indirectly funny. We'll see....

DOUBLE PLUS UPDATE:

So I've decided that the reason Superbad doesn't work the way I thought it would, is that Seth Rogan can't write good teen dialogue. His best scenes are the ones that have interaction with at least 1 adult. The scenes with the teens talking to eachother just aren't very funny. Were this the O.G. Rotten Tomatoes, I would give this flick a 65%...as it is though, the RT Beta site blows goats for quarters, so I wouldn't think of posting to it.

Rotten Tomatoes' Beta: Ready For Composting

Some of you may have noticed that Rotten Tomatoes, the movie review website, has changed its format and probably additionally noted the experience as nothing short of abysmal. Originally, RT boasted a solid review system with lots of users; this was backed by collecting extensive critic reviews and packaging it into a no nonsense, easy-to-read page. The new format, however, has only added more intense ad graphics, hard to find tabs, and a search function that would even make Jeeves roll in his grave.

In short, RT is now unusable..garbage...junk...GOODBYE!

So we called in the bench and sent home the weaklings which left us with three sites that could replace the RT reviews and trailers:

Yahoo!Movies:
Has more user ratings and reviews than just about any other site in addition to a great search. Synopses, however, are excessively short. Critic reviews and ratings are isolated to about 13 "top critics" (versus RT's 50 plus and top critic segregation).

Metacritic:
The original competitor of Rotten with nice, thorough rankings in the side panels. Lacks bonus trailer clips as it often just links to the movie's official website. Users also tend to be on the harsh side ala IMDB ratings, but the lists make comparing and scaling easy.

Movies.Com:
Another popular review site usually used for ordering tickets as the system is robust. It has collections of both critics and users with additional ratings from in-house critics. User reviews are low in number and the trailers are unfortunately low-res and stuck in their flash window that does not offer enlarging.

Out of those those three, which entered and exited the dragon most unscathed: gotta give it to yahoomovies.com.

For those that don't know I predicted this back when Stryker told me about that NBC bringing a non UK version of Top Gear to los estados unidos, nearly a month ago.

I for one don't think that NBC will spring for both of them but I'd watch it. Also as the original show has 3 presenters, you can count on one black/hispanic person and a Female (pref. Asian) to round things out for the NBC demo people.

I know that the Asian female part will raise some eyebrows but think of the eye candy Lucy Lui could offer. Also neither of these two can overshadow Jay/Jerry, so we're most likely looking at
Bill Bellamy/Eddie Griffin and Danica Patrick/Lucy Lui/etc.

A man was charged with drunken driving after going through two bottles of wine, cutting through a snowstorm on his lawn mower and riding down the center of the street to reach a liquor store, authorities said.

People Can Expect Rebates by May Under Economic Recovery Plan WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most taxpayers could expect a rebate of up to $600 starting in mid-May under the economic aid plan set to go through Congress within weeks.

Couples could get twice as much, with even more for most families with children. All that, however, depends on smooth sailing at the Internal Revenue Service, and the agency already is up to its eyeballs in filings and refunds. economy

The Treasury Department says that despite the strains of tax filing season, the IRS will be able to begin delivering the payments within 60 days after President Bush signs the plan into law, and complete the process in approximately 10 weeks, possibly sooner. The payments would come separately from regular tax refunds.

"The IRS has already begun trying to prepare for this," said Andrew DeSouza, a Treasury spokesman. "They'll be ready to go."

But figuring out if you qualify -- and for how much -- can be complicated, thanks to confusing rules designed to get the money to middle-income workers and ensure it also benefits low-income people who are most likely to spend the cash.

"Almost everyone who earns income will receive some benefit," said Douglas W. Elmendorf, an analyst at the Brookings Institution. "The idea is to target the money on the people who will spend a large share of it, and to target it on people who are likely to be hurt by an economic downturn."

People who do not make enough to pay taxes but had at least $3,000 in earned income would get $300. Those earning less than that would be disqualified, as would the wealthiest. Older people living solely off Social Security checks would not get the rebate.

Individuals with adjusted gross incomes of more than $75,000 and couples with income exceeding $150,000 would get smaller checks. Contributions to individual retirement accounts, 401(k) retirement accounts and health savings accounts would not count toward the limits.

About three-quarters of those eligible for the checks are working people. About one-quarter would qualify solely through pension or interest income, such as retirees or people who are unemployed. Eligible people would get at least $300.

For middle-class people, the rebates are fairly straightforward. Most individuals would get a $600 rebate, couples would get $1,200, and those amounts would rise with the size of their families. High- and low-income people, however, would get only a partial benefit.

People with income less than $75,000 would get a rebate equal to the taxes they paid in 2007, up to $600. Couples with income less than $150,000 could get up to $1,200. Those who earned more than $3,000 but owed little or no taxes would get a flat $300, or $600 per couple.

So a low-income family of four -- with $35,000 in income and virtually no tax liability -- would get $1,200. That includes the flat $600 per couple and $300 for each child.

A single person earning minimum wage would receive the lower rebate, $300.

A single parent of two with income of $38,000 and a tax bill of $433 would get $1,033 -- a $433 tax rebate plus $300 per child.

To focus the payments on middle-class people, the plan includes rules that reduce the rebates for those with higher incomes. For each dollar over the limits, the payment goes down by 5 percent.

That means that while a family of four with income of $95,000 would get $1,800 -- $1,200 for the couple and $300 for each child -- a family of four with income of $160,000 would get less, and the same family making $200,000 would get nothing.

Income of $160,000 would put a family $10,000 above the income threshold, reducing the benefit by $500 for a rebate of $1,300. The wealthier family, which falls $50,000 above the threshold, would see its rebate vanish under the formula.

Similarly, a single person with no children who had $16,000 in income would get $600, while the same person making $85,000 -- $10,000 above the limit -- would get just $100.

People would not have to work to receive a rebate. A retired couple owing $4,000 in taxes would get the full $1,200; if they owed no taxes, they would receive only half that. If the couple earned less than $3,000, however, they would be ineligible. That includes 20 million older people whose only income is their Social Security checks.

The plan would allow people who do not qualify for a rebate this year to get one in the spring of 2009 if they become eligible based on their income level or tax liability in 2008. That has been a standard feature of past rebates, although it does nothing to stimulate the economy.

Some 40 million people who file their tax returns online could start getting payments by direct deposit in May. Congressional tax analysts say the government can send out up to 9 million paper checks a week. The IRS will have to reprogram its computers to calculate who gets the rebate and how much they will receive.

"They sort of learned how to do this last time," said Jason Furman, a Brookings economist, referring to the last round of rebates in 2001.

"It's definitely complicated if you're trying to understand it, but it's not actually going to be complicated for people because they're going to get a check from the IRS without having to fill out a single form."

Still, the agency is already working overtime processing tax returns, and rebates will have to take a back seat come April, when it will be overwhelmed in the run-up to Tax Day.

"The two final weeks of tax filing season are very, very high-traffic weeks for the IRS," DeSouza said. "We'll just have to see what capacity they can handle."

So, you asked technology to jump--they said how high--and gave you GCalender, synchronized email, and collaborative note taking applications. This, however, often just added to the stone soup as the technology was not easily accessible, chiefly due to lack of proper input devices, especially on the road.

Enter JOTT. Jott's purpose is to get ideas, schedules, and important facts into your electronic system via your VOICE to Email and SMS text messages. You call jott's toll-free number (1-866-JOTT-123), and the system reads you caller ID data thereby matching your account; say your task and start recording--Jott transcribes the message to your forwarding spot and viola. You've just cataloged your thoughts.

Basic Tasks: Jott's most basic feature is the above: the ability to shoot voice inputed messages that are transcribed to email or SMS text. ReQall. ReQall is another Jott like system, but with a few differences. ReQall allows the user to fetch voice captures by calling into the ReQall system ala recording to your own electronic VoiceMail. Although ReQall does not boast the interfacing of Jott in regards to input, ReQall does offer some goodies such as RSS feeds to text, iPhone app, Apple iCal support, and iGoogle gadgets.

However, this only is available to HBO subscribers and users of Turner "Road Runner" internet service...oh, and you have to live in Wisconsin. So I was up at 4:45 AM this morning and took a quick look at the Yahoo Finance main page.....

Not so good... I quickly check on my E*Trade shares (which of course had dropped to 2.50 from 2.90 in pre-market trading because I owned them), and then I start to check out some of the headline articles.

From the BofA article-- "Net income at the Charlotte-based bank declined to $268 million, or 5 cents per share, in the three months ended Dec. 31 from $5.26 billion, or $1.16 per share, a year ago."

From the Wachovia article--"Fourth-quarter net income fell to $51 million, or 3 cents per share, from $2.3 billion"

So I go the Happy Doughnut, and on the radio-- A global sell off in multiple stock markets is leading to many companies announcing that they will be laying off large parts of their workforces. Yahoo is rumored to announce that they are laying off several hundred workers today...

A 500 point plunge in the DOW. Jesus. Then I see the homepage for yahoo finance and...

The big question-- will they screw it up?

Well, even with an exhaustive search of the entire planet it will be next to impossible to find somebody as good as Jeremy Clarkson to host the program; and finding a suitable American replacement for James May or Richard Hammond would be like finding a polar bear roaming through Death Valley... it really is that unlikely... Let's not even get into what type of sorry excuse NBC would produce to use as a stig. On top of the original cast being irreplaceable, the American version will simply not be British enough. Can you imagine if the Latvians had a space program? If the Polish started their own version of Hollywood? If Monaco wanted to join the G8? There are certain things that will simply not work as well in every country. For example, would Ford have a problem with Hammond (the the crappy American replacement) putting the GT500 they sent to him on a dynamometer and showing the world that the car fell far short of Ford's horsepower claims? Could the American Jeremy drive a new Mercedes and comment that it had "a sat-nav that only goes to Poland"? Would NBC allow the hosts to relentlessly bash the network's major contributors? No.
Ostensibly the concept for the ripoff (I mean show) "Gear" is fantastic, and I think that most of it's success will rely on the correct cast choices being made by NBC (suggestions anyone?). However, there is little doubt in my mind that NBC will not be able to produce something as good as the original. This is not to say I don't continue to eagerly anticipate NBC's "Gear" (as it will certainly be infinately better than most of what is on American television these days), I am still quite confident that it will be a pathetic attempt to create somehting that is as memorable and interesting as the greatest television show ever produced BBC's "Top Gear".

One thing I hate about most browsers is the wasted space between the "file edit view" bar and the margins, but Firefox can be finely tuned like a Turkish prostitute designed by Techart with 8 hands and a variable orifice.

By entirely removing the "navigation toolbar" and dragging the url text box with the "customize" function, you can really condense the look. And with the final addition of these add-ons, Firefox replaces the "file edit view" bar with a simple globe of your choosing. The picture shows the "chooser" menu cascade along with the "all-in-one-sidebar" add-on which gains back any decreased functionality. I've been testing it for a few weeks now and the sidebar for some time, and it works well and adds more usable screen.

40MB Hard Drive from 1985, ITS HUGE!!

I was at MacWorld today (pics from that tomorrow) and ran across this beast!! Its a 40MB hard drive from 1985. You could seriously fit 30 terabyte raid array in this thing. Times sure have changed! Do you think we'll think the same thing about todays hard drives 20 years from now? I found this at the Drive Savers booth. They do data recovery on damaged hard drives. I've used them before and they can pretty much recover any hard drive.

If you didn't turn on a computer today and join the cyber world of "geekdom", Apple released some new products and software. At 9am this morning I was refreshing my browser as fast as possible to see what Steve Jobs was going to announce next and setup twitter to follow keywords "apple, keynote" (more on twitter in a future post).

I have finally realized that the Apple marketing machine has sucked me in. Some of you might laugh and say "You watch too many Mac vs. PC commercials" (yes i've seen them all). But unlike Bose who are marketing genius's as well, Apple actually has great hardware and software. Yes I know its expensive and Steve Jobs is an egotistical maniac but it works and works damn well! Unlike the days of
scrounging my couch for change just to get by, I don't mind paying the premium price to get premium hardware.

As many of you may know I have met many CEO's and tech stars of Silicon Valley over the last 6 years and I've noticed a trend. They're all ditching their Dells, HP's, Gateways even home built computers from parts they've scrounged up at Fry's for Macs. I suspect that this will only lead to the business world and will happen quicker than you think.

Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld was less than spectacular this time around and while the Macbook Air was impressive I just don't see myself buying this type of laptop. I was hopping for a refresh on the Macbook Pro line.
While this laptop is certainly cool it does have its flaws.

THE UGLY

No ethernet port is included only 802.11 N (There is a USB adapter to fix this problem)

No optical drive (CD, DVD etc.) No big deal they do have a cool feature where u can wirelessly use a drive from another Mac or PC

Oh by the way in after hours trading Apples stock is down -6.03.. I suspect this is because people wanted to see more from the Steve Jobs keynote, which was a bit of a disappointment but I'm sure more will come around the same time the SDK is released for the iphone.

Apple Stock Plummets More Than $12 On The First Day Of MacWorld...

Arrogant douche-bag Steve Jobs has just given his key note speech at Macworld. The entire community of die-hard apple fans listen intently (both of them). The huge announcement-- Jobs unveiled his brilliant plan to rent movies through iTunes starting this February at a cost of $3 to $4 per rental. One Apple fan was quoted as saying “this is a great idea” to the other Apple fan. They also both agreed that it was “fabulous” that they could now rent and watch Girl Interrupted while waiting at the drive through line at Starbucks in their VW beetle convertibles while playing with their poodles and pumping Britney Spears through their iPods.

Yet on the day that Apple celebrates their greatness, their stock has plunged by almost $13 per share, or more than 7%. I just wanted any Apple shareholders out there to know that I believe that you deserve this.

I really found it interesting that on their big day they lost 7% of their value. Maybe the rest of the world (or at least those who invest) are starting to see things my way-- Apple sucks. In fact, in my opinion Apple should fall into the universally disliked category along with child molesters, Hitler, Muni, DMV workers, and meter maids.

CES 2008 (just the good stuff)

So I know i was suppose to live blog all of these pictures while I was at CES.. But I was barely sober enough to open my laptop. They should really think about changing the location of CES! Although what could be better than Strippers and Electronic gadgets. It's geek heaven, too bad no one has any money left to go buy any of these cool toys when they go home!!

HD DVD & Dolby

Even though HD DVD is on the outs they did have a booth at CES as you can see below in pictures. Pretty low budget if you ask me! All they did was string a bunch of the movies that are on HDVD up in the air. Nothing like the pirate ship that Blu-Ray had!! Also as seen below Dolby had a kick ass robot from the transformers movie!!

Dell

Dell had a fancy IMac looking computer at their booth. Pretty cool but the Imac is way better!! They also had a cool glass framed monitor as well.

Panasonic

Panasonic had a 150 inch plasma tv!! It weighs 1,900lbs (good luck getting that through the front door of some suckers home). It was huge but had a lot of dead pixels. I don't see this coming to anyones wall anytime soon.

Panasonic also had a Plasma TV that was only 1/2" thick. It actually looked really good and had no dead pixels surprisingly! There were no connections on the TV except for a power connector (obviously). A component located 20 feet away transmitted a 1080P signal wirelessly to the display!! AMAZING!

Pioneer

Pioneer also had a very thin plasma TV. It was an elite model of-course! In my opinion it did look better than the Panasonic.

Sharp

Sharp had an amazing video wall with a hot chick standing by.. I'm not sure which was better the wall or her..

Sony

Out of all the TV's less than a 1/2", we saw at CES Sony by far had the best!! Their 11" OLED is also the only TV that thin that is actually shipping. But for 2,500 you could get a 60 inch plasma thats only a inch or two thicker. So if you're ultra rich and need a TV on your nightstand this might be it! They also had a 30 inch OLED tv that was only a prototype, I can't imagine what it will cost when its released!

Sherman and Ebert

Last night at Drew's house some of the homies were arguing in favor of movies that are "campy," "cheesy,"even "so bad its entertaining." After a good night's rest with Fred on my stomach instead of his "woobus" (spelling please?) I feel refreshed and would like to amend my position. I argued that bad movies are a bad waste of time. I would never watch a movies just to watch a movie. A good movie is hard to make and I honor those films by watching them and only them. A discerning taste goes a long way in preventing future Wars (usu. Dragon). From listening to people say how terrible "Revolver" is I know not to see it. One less thing to worry about!
Taking the idea one step further I argue movies should find you, you should not find movies. In our normal everyday lives (if we, you know, go outside) we run into chats about "awesome" movies "you totally have to see." This is where I get my movie ideas from, not from those stupid internet sites that allow stupid people to post stupid ratings on stupid movies they paid their stupidly earned stupid money for. So stupid. A good movie is one of the coolest inventions of the modern era so it is no wonder we want to see tons of good movies. However, just cause a movie is made does not make it good. Ask Drew about the latest J-Club meeting, we have tons of polling data on what movies gentiles want to watch in what season of the year. It is like shooting goldfish in a goldfish bowl with dual RCP-90's to get a dumbass into a movie theater in America, let's not be such easy targets.
That said, I do have one movie that is completely campy (starring Michael J. Fox, as a prankster camp counselor of asthmatic youths whose main rival is Adam Baldwin) I recommend watching as long as I am no more than 15 years old and it is 1985-1991.

If you were to ask Bill Gates about his plans for life after Microsoft, he'd likely tell you of his desire to improve the living conditions of children in sub-Saharan Africa, eliminate poverty in India, empowering women in the business world, or improve educational standards and graduation rates among the less affluent in the United States.

Gates could just as easily take the path of greed and personal wealth expansion a la Carlos Slim (The world’s wealthiest person according to Fortune Magazine) and take up charitable causes that increase his bank balance. Instead Gates has joined forces with Warren Buffet to combine their wealth and make the world a better place for those less fortunate.

So what can we expect from the Gates the philanthropist? His foundation currently has an asset trust of nearly $38 billion, and as stated above, he has lofty goals for his charity. One might speculate that based on his Microsoft career he could become a major backer in the XO Laptop project or something similar to bridge the gap between the tech haves and have-nots. In a world where most are unable to overcome the technological divide, Gates could be the white knight come to the rescue.

With nearly half the world’s population surviving on roughly two dollars a day, perhaps the trust money could be spent on expanding programs created by Bangladeshi Nobel prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who pioneered the microcredit concept through his Grameen bank. If more of the world’s impoverished population were able to obtain small loans through the Gates foundation’s backing, millions could raise themselves out of poverty.

In a world with so many in need, Gates and his new focus on philanthropy has the potential to empower and better the lives of hundreds of millions if not billions of people worldwide. It is of the utmost importance that the money that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donate makes a difference. If Gates truly wants to make a difference in this world, he must focus on teaching a man to fish and not how to beg for it.

It was once written that “With great power there must also come great responsibility”. Hopefully Gates has taken that to heart, and will give those less fortunate in this world the hand up that they desperately need.

BTW, Here's a list of the best 19 movies you probably didn't see ~~this year~~ last year. I've only seen 3 of them but want to see most of the rest on the list. A shame they didn't include no country for old men, cause that definitely kicked ass.

I've been taking a back seat to this blog because I like seeing what other people are posting. It's sort of like a science experiment that seems to be working well. I'm proud of my little test and since it seems that people are climbing on board, things are progressing the way I'd hoped. To bad that fucknut stryker doesn't post more frequently. Oh btw, Foley is putting his own blog together, so whenever it's finished maybe we can have some cross linking love.
